HOG, POULTRY RAISERS
MEET WITH DA SEC TODAY
The country’s poultry and hog raisers will meet with the Department of Agriculture Secretary today to assess the two sectors’ preparedness for the Christmas Holidays when demand for their products is expected to increase.
The meeting, which will also be attended by the Bureau of Animal Industry and the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS), will also tackle the recent reports of outbreaks of the African Swine Flu in China and Europe and its effect on the local supply.
The country currently imports about 54,000 metric tons of pork every year under the Minimum Access Volume while a considerable volume of Offals are also imported by meat processors.
The meeting, which will be convened by the Philippine Council for Agriculture and Fisheries (PCAF) will also assess the state of the local poultry industry, especially with the lifting of the Special Safeguard Duties (SSG) on imported chicken.
The meeting will start at 1 p.m. at the main building of the Department of Agriculture in Quezon City.
