The Department of Agriculture (DA) Region Field Office V in the Bicol Region reported massive damage to rice fields and crops because of the ashes spewed during the eruption of Mayon Volcano.
This is a new and daunting challenge to our agriculture workers who in the past had to cope with typhoons, landslides and floods.
The Agriculture Department is ready with its interventions but these could not yet be delivered until such time Mayon Volcano stops sending out ashes which cover crops in various vegetative stages.
I will fly to Legazpi City to conduct an on-site assessment to determine what immediate assistance and interventions could be delivered right away.
(After the first two flights were cancelled, I and Undersecretary Eduardo Gongona decided to take the 12-hour land trip to Legazpi today.)
I will be in the area one day ahead of the expected arrival of President Rody Duterte who has announced that he will fly to the Bicol Region on Monday.
