Kidapawan City, North Cotabato – A multi-species hatchery, which aims to breed fish species for commercial purposes and conservation, is expected to start operations by the First Quarter of 2023.
The hatchery is one of the projects being undertaken by a new company which I, former Senator Panfilo Lacson, Fil-Am farmer-scientist Rocky French and four others formed shortly after the elections.
Rocky who heads the Aquaculture Projects of the Southseas Agri-Aqua Ventures Inc. (SAAV Inc.) said the hatchery will produce fingerlings of a new Tilapia Hybrid, Catfish and Guramei for commercial purposes.
It will also undertake conservation and protection breeding of threatened endemic species like the native Hito, Puyo and the Liguasan Marsh freshwater lobster or “Ulang.”
The hatchery which is being developed in a portion of my farm in Kidapawan City is expected to produce at least 50-million fingerlings every year to support the country’s fish sufficiency program.
Rocky French, an aquaculturist who spent over 40 years breeding and raising Tilapia said the hatchery aims to produce quality fingerlings while ensuring that the threatened Aqua species of Mindanao are protected.
The hatchery is one of the projects being undertaken by SAAV Inc. along with Sorghum production for feeds, a Village-Level Feed Mill and Fish Cages in selected areas in Mindanao.
