Today, I received a gift of two Breadfruit seedlings from a tree farming enthusiast, Mulong Fajardo of Antipas, Cotabato.
The two seedlings were propagated through Grafting and Budding using Camansi as rootstocks.
Mulong’s successful experiment, especially through budding, amazes me no end.
Breadfruit (sn: Artocarpus altilis) belongs to the same family as Jackfruit, Tipolo and Camansi (sn: Artocarpus camansi).
Unlike its relatives, however, the Breadfruit is seedless.
The only way to propagate it is through grafting, root propagation and now budding.
Dubbed as a Super Food, the Breadfruit could be a source of food and flour.
Planted in the uplands extensively, the Breadfruit could be a perfect tree species for our re-greening program.
Aside from that, it has great economic potentials as $2-B worth of Breadfruit is needed in the market every year.
