MANILA – Malacañang said Philippine National Police chief Director General Alan Purisima “still has the moral ascendancy” to lead the PNP despite the corruption allegations against him.
“We have to hand it to Gen. Purisima. He answered all the questions truthfully,” presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said in a briefing aired over state-run Radyo ng Bayan on Wednesday.
“He answered with candor,” he added. “He has explained the contents of his Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth.
Whether one would give credence to his answers, it would depend on the observer.”
Lacierda, however, could not give a direct answer when asked if receiving a huge discount for Purisima’s brand-new luxury vehicle was ethical.
The Palace official also expressed confidence that Purisima will be able to continue to lead the PNP’s anti-crime campaign, including running after rogue policemen.
“We can rely on Gen. Purisima’s commitment to rid the PNP of scalawags,” Lacierda said.
“Everybody deserves due process and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty,” he added.
