Quezon City Aug. 17 to 20 MARANG, FRESH VEGETABLES IN 2nd TienDA FARMERS’ FAIR

The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) will mount another farmers’ market on Aug 17-20, this time in Quezon City, as it intensifies its efforts to help ensure that farmers’ produce would be made available directly to consumers.
Dubbed TienDA Farmers and Fishermen’s Outlet, the farmers’ market is a new marketing system launched on July 28, 2017 at the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) Compound in San Andres Manila that aims to eliminate unnecessary layers in the supply chain.
The ultimate goal is to make food affordable for consumers in key urban and consumption centers, while helping farmers and fishers earn more from their hardwork.
TienDA in Quezon City will be held in two locations: Agricultural Training Institute on Aug 17 and 18, and Planas Garden inside the Quezon Memorial Circle on August 19-20, all along the Elliptical Road.
It will be open to public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
As in the pilot edition, the TienDA in Quezon City will also sell fresh fruits, vegetables and other agricultural products at farm gate prices.
A four-day bazaar will also be held at the Planas Garden on August 18 to 20 that will feature a mini-trade fair and technical sessions on topics such as off season calamansi production, native hog raising and urban agriculture, in partnership with Agri-Aqua Network International (AANI).
In a report to Secretary Emmanuel F. Piñol, Undersecretary Bernadette Romulo Puyat of Agribusiness and Marketing and Regional Engagement said the overwhelming support of the public to the inaugural TienDA is an indication that the government is doing right in its fresh marketing tact.
A three-day farmers’ market highlighted the launch of Tienda from July 28 to July 30, where exhibitor-farmers from virtually all regions of the country sold around P1.33 million worth of fresh produce.
Top sellers were durian from Davao Region; pomelo from North Cotabato; rice and various fruits and vegetables from Nueva Vizcaya; salted eggs from Central Luzon; and fish and fishery products, rice, eggs and passion fruit from CALABARZON.
In the second leg of TienDA Farmers Outlet, the exotic Marang from Mindanao will be.made available.
While the price is still high because the fruiting season has just started, Marang will be sold at less than P100 per kilo.
