Ready Market! Soybeans, Sorghum Give Hope For Alamada ‘Kalabasa’ Farmers

Farmers in Alamada, North Cotabato, who suffered huge losses after “Kalabasa” prices dropped from P30 to P2 per kilo, see new hope in two new crops, Sorghum and Soybeans.
After seeing the vigorous growth of Sorghum and Soybeans planted in a Demo and Trials Farm in Barangay Rangayen, farmers are literally queueing up expressing interest in joining the program.
The Demo and Trial Farm is supervised and monitored by the Bureau of Plant Industry, the Dept. of Agriculture Region 12 and Municipal Agriculture Office of Alamada.
Farmers who will plant Sorghum are assured of a market with fixed buying price by the Southseas Agri-Aqua Ventures, Inc., a young agri corporation which I and former Sen. Ping Lacson formed along with several friends.
Soybeans farming which is my personal advocacy is also covered by a buy-back agreement with a pre-agreed price.
Farmers are provided seeds and tractor services payable after harvest while those who do not have the funds to finance the planting are engaged in partnership farming.
Many “Kalabasa” farmers have opted to abandon their crops to shift to either Sorghum or Soybeans.
Sorghum will cover a bigger area because of the availability of seeds.
There is not much seeds for Soybeans so the area to be planted will be limited.
Alamada has over 78,000 hectares in land area and traditionally a Corn production area.
