Zamboanga City – Consumers in this city will be in a fiesta mood today as the Department of Agriculture (DA) and other agencies of government open the DA TienDA Bigasan ng Masa in front of the DA offices here to sell freshly-milled rice at P32 per kilo and newly-shipped NFA rice at P27 per kilo.
Commercial rice coming from private traders shipped in from the Northern Mindanao, Caraga Region, Davao Region and Central Mindanao Region will also be sold at slightly higher prices .
Families will be allowed to buy 5 kilos of NFA rice each while the DA freshly milled rice will be sold at P32 per kilo with a limit of 3 kilos per family.
Commercial rice will be unlimited in quantity.
Fruits from Davao and Central Mindanao and vegetables from nearby regions will also be sold today.
The TienDA Bigasan ng Masa will last until the supplies last.
The staging of the DA TienDA Bigasan ng Masa marks the end of the declared “Rice Crisis” in Zamboanga City which followed the closure of the routes for rice smuggling coming from Sabah, Malaysia which for so long was the source of the rice supplies of the Zamboanga, Basilan, Sulu and Tawitawi region or ZAMBASULTA.
Yesterday, during a dialogue between the DA, NFA and local government officials led by Zamboanga City Mayor Maria Isabel Climaco and Zamboanga Sibugay Governor Wilter Palma, the “Rice Crisis” was officially declared as “Over” following the arrival of fresh NFA stocks and the shipment of commercial coming from other regions.
