Rice at P38 per kilo DA LAUNCHES ROLLING STORE; TienDA GOES TO PAYATAS IN QC

By Manny Piñol
The program of the Department of Agriculture to bring farmers’ products direct to the consumers takes a new form as it launches the Rolling TienDA on Monday, March 5, in Payatas, Quezon City.
Undersecretary for Agribusiness and Marketing Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said a truck laden with freshly-milled rice produced by farmers in Luzon will roll into the Payatas District as early as 8 a.m.
Rice will be in packs of 2-kilos, 5-kilos and 10-kilo bags to be sold at P38 per kilo, which is at least P4 lower than rice offered in the market.
Vegetables from the Cordillera Region and fish from the fishing villages in Luzon will also be offered during the one-day Rolling TienDA.
On Feb. 14, following a spike in the price of rice in the market, the DA launched the Bigas ng Masa by offering rice at P38 in the Agribusiness Center in front of the DA Central Office In Quezon City.
Last Friday, another outlet was opened in the BPI compound in San Andres, Manila.
Following requests from poor Metro Manila residents for DA to bring the TienDA to their communities, the DA Agribusiness Office designed the Rolling TienDA program.
Next week, the Rolling TienDA will roll into another poor village in Metro Manila to sell farmers’ produce.
