At a cost of P1-M per fish cage, 3,000 fish cages which could produce 20 tons of fish per harvest twice a year would be enough to cover the 120,000-metric tons of fish that the Department of Agriculture would like to import now.
The beauty of this is that magiging sustainable na ang fish production natin unlike the proposal to import which would be an annual activity taking out at least P12-B from the local economy everytime we import fish.
All that is needed to achieve fish sufficiency in the country is for governmen to seriously support the Aquaculture Industry by providing financing support, fingerlings and feeds subsidy and an assured market.
As I had proposed in the past, kailangan natin ng at least three National Hatcheries which would employ our best aquaculture and fisheries scientists and experts to produce the needed fry and fingerlings for Bangus and other high value fish species.
And just like the support we give to the rice industry where farmers receive free seeds, farm inputs and equipment, let us also boost the production capacity of our aquaculture stakeholders by providing them free fingerlings for a period of five years para maka-unat talaga.
My friend and farmer-scientist Rocky French has already formulated Aqua Feeds which use largely local feed materials, except for the micro-minerals, and this could improve the profitability of aquaculture.
Kailangan na lang talaga i reactivate ang Food Terminal Inc., para merong government corporation which would facilitate the marketing of our fish production.
Ganyan lang naman sana ka simple ito.
Ang kailangan lang natin napaniwala natin ang mga economic managers and budget planners na syang nagdedesisyon kung anong priorities ang bibigyan ng pondo ng gobyerno.
