The Graveolens (sn: Durio graveolens), a smaller version of the more popular Durian with Red, Orange and Yellow flesh, is the least known species of the exotic thorny fruit mainly because it grows only in four areas in Southeast Asia, in Borneo, in Palawan and other southern islands of the Philippines, Malaysian Peninsula and Sumatra.
I have heard of the Graveolens and saw some video clips of my friend, former Governor Esmael “Toto” Mangudadatu feasting on the colorful flesh of this rare fruit.
Yesterday, in a visit to the farm of an old friend and supporter, Bernard Bautista Jr. in Makilala, Cotabato, I had my first encounter with the Durio graveolens.
Bernard has six mature and fruiting Graveolens and the fruits are sold at P300 per kilo with buyers cleaning up every harvest that he makes.
Durio Graveolens is less pungent and milder than the more popular Durian varieties like Musang King, Puyat, D101 and other commercial species.
But it is not the unique qualities of the Durio graveolens which would generate huge interest soon but the anecdotal account that Bernard Bautista Jr. shared with me yesterday.
Bernard said that a childless couple who came to his farm a few years ago bought a few Graveolens and came back for more later.
Shortly after that, the couple told Bernard that they finally had a child and they attributed it the Graveolens which made them both sexually active.
Of course, that is just an anecdotal account of the aphrodisiac qualities of the Graveolens which had not been scientifically established.
Stories like the one shared by Bernard will make this exotic Durian species a hot market item.
The Graveolens start bearing fruit at 3 to 4 years after planting,
The problem is planting materials of Graveolens are not that many but I have asked Bernard to propagate more so that we could include this in the fruit tree seedlings that we will offer in our Satellite Nurseries which will be established all over the country.
