The planting of Sorghum initiated by our small company, the Southseas Agri-Aqua Ventures, Inc., could finally boost the production of Small Ruminants in the country.
In fact, in support of the programs of the new Agriculture Secretary, Kiko Laurel, I have designed a 10-Year Small Ruminants Multiplier Farms Program for Goat and Sheep.
This program, however, is anchored on the availability of Silage materials which would come from Sorghum.
A versatile crop which could survive long dry spells, Sorghum retains its green leaves and stalks at harvest.
The green stalks and leaves are ideal silage materials which when properly kept in anaerobic containers could remain edible and nutritious for a long period.
Silage has always been the problem of Philippine Goat, Sheep and Cattle Raisers.
The planting of Sorghum in vast areas of Mindanao would finally solve this.
One hectare of Sorghum could produce Silage which could feed 100 heads of Goats or Sheep for one year.
A Sorghum area of 10,000 hectares could feed a million.
So, as the Sorghum area expands, it is recommended that the DA Bureau of Animal Industry should partner with farmers groups to establish Goat and Sheep Multiplier Farms.
In the 10-Year Small Ruminants Multiplier Farms Program which was submitted to Sec. Laurel, I recommended the first Multiplier Farm to be established in North Cotabato where we are growing Sorghum.
