The Department of Agriculture (DA) will formally commission another unit of Solar-Powered Irrigation System (SPIS) in Llanera, Nueva Ecija tomorrow.
This will be the fourth unit which will be formally turned over to the DA whivh in turn will award it to the rice farmers of Llanera.
The Llanera SPIS will cover at least 70 hectares of rice farms which were previously irrigated using a diesel engine to drive water pumps.
Farmers complained that they spent about P15, 000 per hectare every year for the diesel fuel alone.
Now, they will only have to rely on the sunlight to run a 25 horsepower Lorentz water pump to draw water from a nearby river.
The water goes to a concrete reservoir and distributed to the rice fields using pipes.
The whole system costs less than P10-M.
A group of Israeli solar irrigation experts will join officials of the DA during the commissioning.
