Malalag Bay, Davao del Sur – Yesterday, Filipino-American farmer-scientist Rocky French and I were back in Malalag Bay to undertake the preparations for the final test of an Aqua Feed Formulation produced the SAAV Corp. in a village-level feed mill in Kidapawan City.
The location of the final test is a Fish Cage Farm owned by the Escaño family, the RFC Company, which has 70 cages producing about 15 tons of Bangus weekly.
A young scion of the family, Tammy Escaño, manages the fish farm which was established in 2018 and had been operating successfully since then.
Rocky wanted to get more details on the operations, the water quality, salinity level and even the changes in the water temperature.
The farm’s on-site operations manager, Toto Buenaflor Galvez, provided Rocky with all of the information he needed in formulating feeds intended for the specific area.
Rocky believes in the Principle of Specificity in formulating feeds, meaning each fish cage area has varying parameters critical in a successful operation.
The rule that Rocky would like to perpetuate in formulating feeds in the small feed mill which the Southseas Agri-Aqua Ventures Corp. is starting in Kidapawan City is that it must be area specific.
The SAAV Corp. is a small company which I, former Senator Panfilo Lacson, Rocky French and four other friends established as part of our advocacy to contribute to the country’s goal of Food Self-Sufficiency.
The village-level feed mill is one of the components of an interlinked endeavor which starts with feed grains production through Sorghum, feeds production, Aqua and Livestock Farming and hopefully value adding through processing.
“Only a small village-level feed mill concept can do this since we do not expect the big Aqua Feed Mill companies to formulate custom-made feeds,” Rocky said.
The SAAV Corp. Aqua Feeds will now be field tested in several fish cages in the RFC Fish Farm starting September for a period of two months.
After that, we will start addressing the needs of the fish farms by formulating and processing Aqua Feeds using the “Principle of Specificity.”
