In Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur Sub-Saharan Mindanao, Fresh ‘Galunggong’ Is P190, ‘Danggit’ P140/Kilo!
Last night, I took a 7-hour land trip from Kidapawan City to the Eastern Coastal town of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur to pay my last respects to a dear friend, former Mayor Candelario “Bakwing” Viola.
I met Mayor Viola 35 years ago when I ventured into Bangus and Prawn farming in his town.
The ventured did not turn out profitable but it started our friendship.
Over a week ago, Mayor Viola, who has retired from politics, succumbed to aneurysm at age 80.
After the church services, I dropped by the town’s new public market where fresh fish is sold at very affordable prices.
This was what Bakwing was always proud of, the fresh fish in the market and the famous Enchanted River.
