Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay – As the world faces an economic crisis, the best option that a country like the Philippines has is to boost its local production of commodities needed by the country, especially food.
Even outside of government, I feel it is my obligation as a Food Self-Sufficiency Advocate to show our national leaders a way out of this difficult situation.
Dependence on importation must be reduced while focusing on local production through surgical and timely intervention.
Fish is one commodity which we could produce sufficiently in the country if only our interventions are targeted and results oriented.
Last night, after crossing the channel from Dumaguete City to Dapitan City, Rocky French, I and the small team of workers with me, proceeded to Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay to visit the town of Kabasalan early this morning.
Kabasalan is one of the towns I have identified as a potential fish cage production area.
While having breakfast at Jollibee Ipil, however, I met Buug, Zamboanga Sibugay Mayor Dionesia Lagas who was scheduled to go to Zamboanga City today for a conference.
She literally begged me to visit her town and discover the potentials of the coastal municipality for aquaculture and mariculture.
When Rocky and I checked the location of Buug in the map, we found out that it is one of the towns of Zamboanga Sibugay and Zamboanga del Sur located in a big cove.
Rocky estimates that thousands of fish cages could be established in the area and with the feed mill that we have established in Kidapawan City, fish production could be boosted.
What makes the area ideal is the fact that it is only about 5 hours away from the Northern Mindanao Ports of Dapitan, Plaridel and Dipolog, the gateway to the fish hungry provinces of Cebu, Bohol, Negros Island and Panay.
This is the way to fight the looming worldwide economic crisis, each and every Filipino must find a way to contribute to boosting the local economy to create jobs for our people and ensure sufficient food supply for our country.
