PHIL-SOUTH KOREA EMPLOY
GINSENG, MANGO DIPLOMACY
By Manny Piñol
Seoul, South Korea – In a country where giving and receiving of gifts have sent many officials to jail, the world-renowned Guimaras Mango and the iconic Korean Ginseng have taken the centerstage in Philippine/South Korea diplomatic engagements.
Declared as without value because of its perishability, the Department of Agriculture (DA) officials brought with them Guimaras Mango to be given as tokens to their South Korean counterparts.
The South Koreans, on the other hand, prepared boxes of Ginseng extracts for their Filipino visitors.
Both gifts, symbolic of each country’s agriculture, are being exchanged between officials of both the Philippines and South Korea during official meetings.
After today’s signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on Agricultural Cooperation, Acting Agriculture Minister Kim Hyeeon-soo gifted me with a box of Ginseng.
In return, I gave him a box containing nine pieces of ripe Guimaras Mangoes.
Personally, I like these items as gifts.
Masarap na, wala pang isyu!
