When German engineer-farmer Mark Willems learned that I and my family were in his Golden Duck Restaurant last night, he rushed out of the playroom of his twins and carried them half-naked to meet me.
Our conversation ranged from the problems he and his wife, Filipina nurse Juvelyn Mallorca Willems, originally from Midsayap, North Cotabato, faced in raising ducks and growing black rice in their farm in New Corella, Davao del Norte.
What jolted me during the conversation was when he said he wished “the Philippines had more Manny Pinols” to inspire farmers.
It was an accolade that I did not expect to hear from a struggling farmer.
I am happy to inspire and encourage farmers to produce more food in spite of the challenges they faced.
