The Presidency of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines could have served as a pathway to a lucrative legal practice in the big city or a top government position for young Bukidnon lawyer Burt Estrada.
Atty. Burt Miquiabas Estrada, who holds the title Datu Manhan-ayan of the Tagoloanon Tribe of Malaybalay, Bukidnon, however, chose to go back to his tribal community after serving as IBP President to lead his people in developing their Ancestral Domain.
Today, Burt M. Estrada, a graduate of the Xavier University of Cagayan de Oro, serves as Tribal Chieftain of the Tagoloanon Tribe and General Manager of the Bukidnon Tagoloanon Mulahay Ha Kabukalagan Agriculture Cooperative (BUKTAMACO).
Under his leadership, BUKTAMACO, with the support of the USAID, has planted Giant Bamboo in 1,000 hectares of tribal lands which will soon be enrolled in the Carbon Credit Program.
Recently, he pioneered the introduction of a new hybrid rice variety to be planted in the Ancestral Domain following the traditional yearly rice farming called “Panuigon.”
In my last conversation with Atty. Burt, he expressed interest in the Mindanao Halal Beef Program which I am advocating.
To be able to do this, Atty. Burt suggested that we plant Sorghum, the source of feeds and silage for cattle, initially in the spaces in between the young Giant Bamboo clumps.
On Tuesday, Atty. Burt and his group will join me in visiting the Great Arch Farm of Arnel Corpuz in Polomolok, South Cotabato and visit the Sorghum and Soybeans Demo Farm of former MNLF members in Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte.
With the emergence of young tribal leaders like Atty. Burt Estrada, the future looks bright for the Tribal People of the country.
