Tomorrow, July 18, in simple ceremonies in the Office of the City Mayor of Kidapawan, the Integrated Farming System Program which involves initially planting 200 hectares to Sorghum and Soybeans and later raising Cattle, Goats and Sheep will be launched.
The Sorghum and Soybeans Development Program which had been adopted by young City Mayor Paolo Evangelista will be the foundation of the program to turn this agricultural city at the foot of Mt. Apo into the Beef, Chevon and Lamb Production Center of the Philippines.
Sorghum Production which is a project of a small company that I and former Sen. Panfilo Lacson formed in 2022 will be supported by the City Mayor because aside from the grains harvested, it will be the source of Silage which would be used in the Cattle Fattening and Goat and Sheep Production.
Soybeans Production, a project supported by Vetmate Farma Corp. which buys the grains produced will also be the source of the protein needed for animal feed mix.
Kidapawan City is known as the source of affordable meat, especially beef, produced by local farmers but the supply is limited because of the small cattle population.
With the introduction of Sorghum and Soybeans in the city last year, I introduced to the City Government the Integrated Farming System aimed at producing more Cattle and Goats, including Sheep.
The program will later be cascaded to the barangay level where farmers who will participate in the Sorghum Program will be given a herd of Cattle, Goats or Sheep to raise and fatten.
When I was Agriculture Secretary, the City received a Double A Slaughterhouse and several heads of Brahman Breeders to boost cattle production.
Mayor Evangelista said he will propose to the City Council the procurement of cattle locally and from Australia for a Fattening program to turn the city into a major Beef production center in Mindanao and later in the country.
