Visit all the Food Supermarkets in the U.S. and Europe and you will discover that almost all of the coconut-based products come from Thailand, a country with only 216,000 hectares of Coconut.
Nowhere to be found are Indonesia World No. 1, India World No. 2 and the Philippines World No.3 which has 3.6-million hectares.
What is Thailand’s secret?
It’s Value Adding and excellent Market Presentation or Packaging, not to mention the great support given by the Thai Government.
Thailand’s Coconut industry focused on high value products like the marketing of Fresh Aromatic Coconut and processed coconut meat.
Merong mga enterprising farmers groups getting into Coconut Sugar Production but the government intervention is insufficient.
In 2019, I visited a province in Thailand where the main industry is the production of high value Sweet Water and Aromatic Coconut.
What I saw truly amazed me.
In an area which is often flooded and water-logged, Thai coconut farmers created virtual islands where Aromatic coconut was planted.
The water canals which separated the islands were turned into fish growing areas.
The beauty of the water surrounding the Coconut Islands is that it prevents the breakage of the nuts because these fall into the water during harvest.
May niyog na sila, may isda pa!
It is a classic example of turning adversity into myriad of opportunities.
Let’s swallow our pride and learn from people who decades ago came to our country to study Agriculture.
They applied what they learned while we still debate over theories until today.
