With the prices of chemical and inorganic fertilizer soaring beyond the reach of small farmers, locally developed and produced Seaweed-Based Foliar Fertilizers are taking a big role in Philippine crop production.
I am a believer in the effectiveness of the Seaweed-Based Fertllizer, especially AMO which former Congressman Eric Acuña had been promoting long before the fertilizer crisis.
Nobody had actually given the locally produced Seaweed-Based Foliar had serious look, especially so since liquid fertilizers suffered a big black eye during the Fertilizer Scam many years ago where bogus foliars, most of which had not been field tested, were sold by scammers.
Recent developments, however, could give the local foliars a big boost, especially so since there are already sufficient testimonies from users of its effectiveness in boosting production.
In fact, my recent visitors, the owners of Scott Seed Company in Hereford, Texas, brothers Coby and Chad Kriegshauser, wanted to try seaweed-based foliars in their Sorghum nursery in Amarillo.
I promised to send them samples of AMO and since this is organic, I do not expect to encounter problems penetrating the US agricultural market if proven effective.
What excites me is the prospect of this seaweed-based foliars making a huge impact on the lives of our seaweed farmers in Mindanao, Sulu, Tawitawi and Palawan.
There is so much area in the country where we could propagate seaweeds and this could provide jobs, create income opportunities and boost the economy of the country.
