Kiamba, Saranggani – On the first leg of our long journey in the western coastline of Mindanao, two towns had already shown great potentials in the production of the high value fish, Grouper, locally known as Lapulapu.
Mayor Danny Martinez of Kiamba, son of my college classmate and former mayor Raul Danny Martinez, and Mayor Bryan Regamit of Maitum informed me and Fil-Am farmer scientist Rocky French that the coastlines of the two towns are rich sources of Grouper fingerlings.
What the towns needed to cash in on this natural resource is a technology which would allow fishermen to catch the fingerlings and grow them in fish cages.
Malalakas ang alon sa dalawang bayan na ito kaya kailangan nila ng bagong technology in raising the Groupers in submerged cages.
Hearing that, I immediately called up Inca Mariculture Plastics vice president Jonathan Cabasas and requested for four demo units of the submerged fish cages for Grouper and Lobster.
My request was granted and before the elections this year, four Grouper Underwater Fish Cages will be installed in the two towns to serve as prototypes.
This could prove to be a breathrough for the fishermen of the two towns who had been complaining of dwindling catch in the Saranggani Bay.
