Very expensive fish! Philippine Red Grouper Thrives Off Our Islands

Here are some photos of the Red Grouper or the “Sono.”
This is a deep water dweller fish which if caught live by handline or oftentimes by stunning, commands as much as P5,000 per kilo.
While the population, including the fingerlings, is large in many waters off the islands of Mindanao, Sulu, Basilan, Tawitawi and Palawan, it is very difficult to grow the Red Grouper in fish cages.
In shallow waters, the “Sono” loses its red skin pigmentation and turns black or brown.
A new technology, developed by Japanese aquaculture experts, which introduces cages moored to a depth of 15 meters could be a game changer.
Inca Philippines, a purely Filipino company, will introduce the technology to Olutanga Island on Sept. 14.
Three units which it will donate to the towns of Olutanga, Mabuhay and Talusan will be launched to serve as pilot projects in the proposed Olutanga Island Mariculture Park.
This could be the technology which would change for the better the lives of marginal fishermen in the Philippines.
