American Sorghum experts currently visiting the Philippines to check on the performance of the seeds they earlier sent have admitted that the Philippines is a more ideal place to plant and produce Sorghum.
Michael Coby Kriegshauser, CEO of Scott Seed Company of Hereford, Texas which he co-owns with his brother, Chad, said Philippine Sorghum outgrows Texas Sorghum by about 20 days.
“At 7 days, your Sorghum is already two inches tall while ours would take 15 days to germinate,” he said.
Chuck Cielencki, Sorghum breeder of Scott Seed, said the early growth could be attributed to higher moisture in the soil and the temperature.
Chad Kriegshauser said this outstanding performance could result in early maturity and higher yield.
While it takes farmers in Texas 125 days to harvest, Philippine experience showed that Sorghum matures at 100 to 105 days.
Coby, Chad, Barry Kriegshauser and Chuck visited South and North Cotabato for three days along with former Senator Ping Lacson to launch the Sorghum Development Program of the Southseas Agri-Aqua Ventures, Inc.
