Kidapawan City has joined the growing list of Local Governments in Mindanao which sees the potentials of Sorghum and Soybeans Rotational Farming System in improving the lives of their farmers.
Yesterday, young Kidapawan City Mayor Jose Paolo M. Evangelista visited the Sorghum Demonstration Farm in Barangay Paco and was convinced that Sorghum and Soybeans, along with the raising of small ruminants like Sheep and Goats would boost the income of the city’s farmers.
Mayor Evangelista has directed his staff to organize a Farmers’ Forum right after New Year to introduce the concept of Integrated Farming System (IFS) which I presented to him yesterday.
The IFS aims to address the basic problems faced by many farmers all over the country which include financing, technology and marketing.
It involves the introduction of two major crops, Soybeans and Sorghum, which would be planted using a Rotational Cropping System, and two special crops, Onion and Garlic.
Sorghum Farming is handled by the Southseas Agri-Aqua Ventures, Inc. (SAAVI) which will provide the seeds, technology, post harvest and a guarantee to buy back the farmers produce at an agreed buying price.
Soybeans, Onion and Garlic are covered by Vetmate Farma Corporation which, just like SAAVI, will also provide seeds, technology, post-harvest and guaranteed buy-back scheme.
In addition to these crops, the IFS will also introduce the raising of small ruminants with Sorghum Silage as the main feed material and free-range chicken raising.
Kidapawan City is the third local government unit in North Cotabato Province to adopt the IFS with Alamada and Mlang as the first two participants.
The towns of Dumalinao, Zamboanga del Sur and Upi and South Upi in Maguindanao have also expressed interest in doing the program.
