SINGAPORE EYES PH SUPPLY
OF PORK, POULTRY, VEGGIES
By Manny Piñol
The Philippines and Singapore today agreed to fasttrack Agricultural Trading negotiations to allow the export of pork, chicken and eggs, vegetables and shrimps to the tiny but rich country by early next year.
During a Christmas call I made on Singapore’s Ambassador to the Philippines, Ms. Kok Li Peng, I presented samples of products which could be exported by the Philippines to Singapore.
The items included Carrots from Talakag town in Bukidnon which, along with the towns of Impasugong, Somilao and Lantapan, have been identified by the Department of Agriculture as the new vegetable production region of the country.
During the talks held at the Singapore Embassy at the Bonifacio Global City, Ambassador Li Peng said the offer of the Philippines to export food products was very timely because Singapore is currently looking for sources of food other than its traditional supplier Malaysia.
Robina Corp. officer Dante Palabrica said the Gokongwei-owned company is interested in supplying chicken, eggs and chilled pork.
He said shipment of highly perishable products would not be a problem to the corporation because its sister-company, flies to Singapore several times a week.
Among those who joined the DA team were Undersecretary Ariel Cayanan, Asst. Secretary Enrico Garzon, Asst. Sec. Andrew Villacorta, Director Ronnie Domingo, Director Simeon Amurao, Boots Escandor of the International Affairs Division and other Bureau of Animal Industry officials.
The visit was made following reports quoting the Agri-Food and Veterinary Services of Singapore that it was looking for suppliers of chicken and egg because Malaysia was scaling down on its exports to Singapore.
The link to the story was sent to me by a follower of this page which prompted me to immediately organise a negotiating team to discuss the prospects with the Singapore Ambassador.
It was agreed that the AVA will send an inspection team to the Philippines early next year.
