Farmers who have joined the Soybeans and Sorghum Production Program in Alamada, North Cotabato will be organized into a cooperative this week to be able to avail of crop production financing from the Land Bank of the Philippines.
While the organization will start in Alamada, the coop will be known as the Cotabato Soybeans & Sorghum Growers Cooperative or COSSOGCO in anticipation of its expansion to other areas of the province soon.
Alamada Mayor Jesus N. Sacdalan supported my proposal to organize the Soybeans and Sorghum Farmers into a cooperative following a commitment of support by LBP Kidapawan Lending Center of financing for the two crops, especially Soybeans.
LBP President Cecil Borromeo earlier stated that LBP supports the Philippine Soybeans Industry and other grains like Sorghum, especially so since President Ferdinand Marcos had identified Soybeans as a priority crop for government support when he was Senator.
It was then Sen. Marcos who authored the Bill on the Philippine Soybeans Industry Act in 2013.
The Core Group of COSSOGCO will be composed of farmers who have already planted Sorghum and Soybeans, including those who have indicated their intent to join the program.
Many others have expressed interest to join the program but said they needed financial support for seeds and farm inputs.
What makes Sorghum and Soybeans attractive to farmers is the Buy-Back Scheme offered by Southseas Agri-Aqua Ventures, Inc. for Sorghum and the Braveheart Farms & Nursery for Soybeans.
The Municipal Agriculturist and the Municipal Cooperative Development Officer of Alamada will lead the organization supported by the Cooperatives Development Authority (CDA).
