Bohol Bangus Hatchery!

Unknown to many, Bohol, where the price of fish is “Dollars,” has a Bangus hatchery which produces millions of fry and fingerlings every year.
The Hatchery operated by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources is located in Pangangan, an island off the coast of Calape town.
The Hatchery is one of the many which were rehabilitated during my short stint as Secretary of Agriculture and was handled for many years by a capable BFAR officer, Dionisio “Dodong” Colantro.
Dodong was one of the BFAR officers whom I sent to the U.S. to train in Tilapia Breeding in the facility previously owned by Filipino-Am farmer-scientist Rocky French.
Right after getting off the Ferry Boat which brought me and my team from Duamguete City to Tagbilaran City, we took a 45-minute ride in a van provided by local businessman Cesar Maluenda to the town of Calape.
In my visit to the Calape Bangus Hatchery yesterday, I was joined by Jonathan Cabasa, Vice President of Inca Mariculture Plastics a company which makes floating fish cages; Rocky French, Dan Bolos and couple Samson and Julie Mante.
Sam Mante, a retired U.S. Navy Officer, has come home to establish a fish cage farm in his hometown of Loon, Bohol.
Today, technical divers of Inca Mariculture will explore the bay in front of Loon to find an ideal location for the establishment of Bangus Fish Cages.
When fully operational, the Fish Cages would be the source of affordable fish for Boholanos and the thousands of tourists who flock to the island every year.
