One Small Step! Multi-Species Hatchery

Now Breeding Pangasius
After successfully breeding a new strain of Tilapia, the Multi-Species Hatchery of our young company, Southseas Agri-Aqua Ventures, inc., is now venturing into the breeding of Pangasius, “Puyo,” and Freshwater Ulang.
Filipino-American farmer-scientist Rocky French who is handling the aquaculture projects of SAAVI, a young company which I and former Senator Ping Lacson formed in 2022, said he has grown to breeding size 27 Pangasius which he acquired from his niece, who owns a fish shop.
“Pangasius is a genus of medium-large to very large shark catfishes native to fresh water in South and Southeast Asia,” according to wikipedia.
“This tropical species, widely known in the trade as Swai or Tra, is particularly suited for farming, as evidenced by the phenomenal growth of the industry in Vietnam. P. hypophthalmus exhibits extremely rapid growth, efficient feed conversion, and tolerance of high stocking density and low dissolved oxygen,” an information posted in the web said of the Pangasius.
Rocky said it will take sometime before SAAVI will be able to commercially produce fingerlings but a successful breeding of Pangasius in the Kidapawan City hatchery could be a game changer for small fish farmers in Central Mindanao.
One small step at a time on the way to achieving Food Sufficiency in the countryside.
