The multi-species hatchery project of the Southseas Agri-Aqua Ventures established starting last year in Kidapawan City is finally taking shape and ready to breed.
There will be initially three freshwater species which will be bred to produce quality fry and fingerlings – Tilapia, Catfish and Mudfish or “Dalag.”
The target of Rocky French, our aquaculture expert, is to produce a new Tilapia hybrid which would yield predominantly male fingerlings.
A Tilapia species from Africa is expected to be brought in next month to be crossed with the local breeds to produce a new hybrid.
Presently, Mudfish or Dalag is already being bred in one of the ponds in our Kidapawan City farm while Catfish will be next.
Hopefully, by the 4th Quarter of 2023, quality fingerlings of the new hybrid Tilapia, Catfish and Mudfish will be available for our freshwater fish farmers.
