During my short trip to Iloilo this week, I made a quick visit to the Southseast Asia Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) to explore aquaculture opportunities.
Director General Dan Baliao and his team of scientists and researchers are making great accomplishments with the support of the Dept. Of Agriculture, on top of the regular funds the Center gets from donor countries.
One the most pleasant developments I discovered was the success of SEAFDEC in breeding the Philippine Freshwater Prawn, also known locally as “Ulang” or “Pahi.”
SEAFDEC has started the commercial production of Post-Larvae stocks of the “Ulang” which farmers could buy at P3 each.
This is a great opportunity for Aquaculture Farmers who could now buy Baby Freshwater Prawns which could be grown in freshwater or brackish water areas.
SEAFDEC scientists and technicians could produce at least 100,000 baby “Ulang” and the volume is expected to increase as more breeders reach maturity.
I was one of the first clients as I placed an order of 10,000 baby prawns monthly which I will raise in my inland fishpond.
In 5 months, I expect to product a lot of “Pahi” or “Ulang.”
Raising “Ulang!”
