A SIMPLE CELEBRATION FOR A SIMPLE WOMAN

Yesterday, my family marked a special day in the life of the woman of the house and my wife for 28 years, Emily Garces Asentista.

In keeping with her personality, my wife marked her 47th birthday in a very simple manner – a dinner in a restaurant in SM Lanang, Davao City and a movie – Despicable Me 2 – in nearby Abreeza Mall.

My wife has always been in the backstage and even when I was Governor of North Cotabato, chose to stay at home away from the limelight and took care of the children.

She never interfered with my work or, as some politician’s wives are wont to, threw her weight and influence around.

It was only during the annual foundation day celebration of the province and my birthday that she set foot on the provincial capitol.

Last year, during a brief talk with President Noynoy Aquino, I proudly told him that in my nine years as Governor of North Cotabato, my wife was never engaged in any business transaction with the provincial government, not even selling a single toothpick to the government.

Born to a poor family whose parents struggled to send her to school, my wife was a college scholar who studied very hard to maintain her scholastic standing, a trait that she developed among all of our three children.

She doted on our children and made sure that everybody studied the lessons in school before going to bed. In fact, until today, she personally assists our youngest son, Imman, in studying his lessons and requires him to read a book before going to sleep.

With her eldest daughter, Maria Krista, now a doctor, the second girl, Josa Bernadette, already in third year of the medical school and the youngest child, Bernhart Immanuel, turning out to be a very respectful and obedient boy, I can see the sense of fulfillment that my wife enjoys.

My children are so blessed to have her as their mother and I am comforted by the fact that during the days and nights when I was not around to guide our children, my wife was always there to stand by them.
