In the confusion and panic which followed the series of tremors in North Cotabato, a text message was passed around saying that a volcano “sprouted” in Carmen, the epicenter of the 5.7 Intensity earthquake.
The text message claimed that a volcano called Mt. Kilatungan was found in the boundaries of Barangays Kilala and Kibudtungan, thus earning the name “Kilatungan.”
It was because of this false information that the Philvolcs came out with a statement saying that the report of a “discovered” volcano in Carmen was not true.
Indeed, there is a volcano named Mt. Kalatungan, listed by the Philvolcs as one of the potentially active volcanoes in Mindanao, but it is not in Carmen.
Mt. Kalatungan is locaeted north of Carmen near the towns of Talakag and Pangatucan.
Followers of this post have asked for a picture of Mt. Kalatungan and I am happy to share with you a picture which was sent to us by French Godlex Andico.
Godlex also provided us the link to the pinoy mountaineer blogsite from which he downloaded the photo of Mt. Kalatungan.
Thank you for the link Godlex and I hope people will understand that Mt. Kalatungan is not in Carmen, North Cotabato, neither is it the cause of the earthquakes.
