Let us take a pause from the scary stories of the conflict in our province, North Cotabato, and shift our focus on the things that make us feel good.
Have you heard of expensive animals?
Perhaps, some of the most expensive animals would be racehorses as I have heard that some horse racers buy outstanding equines for as much as $1-M.
But have you heard of goats costing as much as $10,000?
I have known of one goat belonging to a breed called La Mancha, a dairy breed distinctive by the absence of floppy ears, which was sold in an auction for $9,500.
That’s about P400,000 equivalent to the price of a second hand car.
I know this because I have been involved with goat raising.
At one time, I had about 500 goats in my Paco farm in Kidapawan City but decided to unload them and most of my stocks were acquired by Maguindanao Gov. Toto Mangudadatu.
Shortly after that, I partnered with an American friend, Jim Clem, and set up a small goat farm in Klamath Falls, Oregon.
Our goal was to breed two of the best dairy goat lines available in the United States – the Six M Galaxy and Goldthwaithe Anglo Nubians.
Today, that small dairy farm, BraveColt Dairy Goat Ranch, has over 50 heads of Anglo Nubians of Six M Galaxy and Goldthwaithe, undeniably two of the best milking lines in the United States today.
Our top herd sire is a young buck named Six M Galaxy Holly’s Barry who comes from an illustrious line of outstanding milk producers according to records of the American Dairy Goat Association.
Here is Holly’s Barry’s pedigree: http://www.adgagenetics.org/GoatDetail.aspx….
Barry was acquired directly from Six M Galaxy breeder Martin McClure whose mother, the late Louise McClure developed a line of Anglo Nubians which for so many years topped the list of outstanding milkers in the United States dairy goat industry.
When I acquired Barry from Martin McClure, I had to travel long to Pomona, California and paid the equivalent of P100,000.
It was money wisely spent for one of the most outstanding and sought after goat lines in the history of the American dairy goat industry.
Today, Barry has produced several outstanding kids which are ready for export to the Philippines.
The price of his offsprings? It’s roughly about P50,000 each. That does not include the cost of the shipment and the documents.
But it will be money wisely spent for a goat line which I believe would improve the Philippine dairy goat industry.
