Davao City cannot claim that it is totally free of corruption but businessmen, including the big investors who established malls and other businesses in the biggest country of the world, could attest that nobody extorted money from them in exchange for favors.
The seriousness of the campaign against corruption in the city is such that any businessman who would attempt to bribe a city government employee faces the risk of his papers being thrown to the waste basket.
For the employee, it is immediate termination from work.
Mayor Rody Duterte, however, believes that the campaign against corruption is hampered by the long legal processes and it would take years before those involved in corruption cases could be punished.
There must be a more sustained, forceful and faster effort to end corruption in the Philippines.
On Sunday, Jan. 18, Mayor Duterte shares his thoughts on how the evil of corruption could be subdued.
