2 Cotabato LGUs Offer Free Bamboo, Fruit Tree Seedlings

A Greening Program could be more effectively implemented by the Local Governments and the Capital City of North Cotabato, Kidapawan, and the small mountain town of Antipas are perfect examples.
Kidapawan City Mayor Jose Paolo Evangelista, a young lawyer who is on his first term, has launched free fruit tree seedlings and Bamboo propagules program for farmers of the city.
In just two years, the City with a population of about 175,000 has already planted over 2-million seedlings in its barangays located in the critical slopes of the country’s tallest mountain, Mt. Apo.
In a recent Facebook post, the young Mayor said: “Our legacy to the next generation will not be skyscrapers but millions of trees.”
Antipas Mayor Cristobal Cadungon, on the other hand, has distributed thousands of Durian and other fruit tree seedlings as he aims to turn his small mountain town into a major fruit producer in the province.
What is remarkable about the accomplishments of these two Mayors is the fact that the programs they implemented did not require huge funding or complicated programs.
They simply used common sense in governance knowing that since their territories are located in critical slopes of the province, the best strategy to prevent flooding and disaster is to plant trees.
This is what I call Common Sense Governance which should be copied by other flood-prone LGUs.
