The beauty of campaigning in the interior towns of Iloilo and Antique is being able to speak in a language which I am very comfortable with, Karay-a, the language spoken at home when I was a young boy.
Karay-a is the language of an ethnic group which originally came from the inland towns of Iloilo Antique, southern part of Guimaras, southern Aklan, Occidental Mindoro particularly in Ilin Island, Western Capiz, Palawan and in the provinces of Cotabato, South Cotabato, Saranggani, Sultan Kudarat and some parts of Bukidnon.
This is the language of my forebears and while I could speak other Philippine languages because Mindanao is multi-lingual, including Cebuano, Bol-anon and conversational Maguindanao, I am most comfortable with Karay-a.
Conveying my message to the people of Iloilo for the last two days was as easy as telling stories to a group of children to attentively listened because they understood the langauge.
