MANILA – Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte would not settle for vice president should he run for a higher position in the 2016 elections, according to the leader of his party.
Senator Aquilino Pimentel III, president of PDP-Laban, said that while he doesn’t know all of Duterte’s plans, he feels the mayor is setting his sights only on the presidency.
Duterte has not announced his plans for 2016 yet.
“Mayor Duterte feels he is pressed for time. He wants radical changes in the country. He can only achieve these as president, not as vice president,” Pimentel told reporters on Tuesday.
“If I know his temperament, his character, and his personality, I don’t think he will settle for vice president.”
Pimentel made the statement after being asked if PDP-Laban would consider holding talks with the Liberal Party (LP) to pair off Duterte with its presumptive presidential candidate, Interior Secretary Mar Roxas.
Like Duterte and many other possible candidates except Vice President Jejomar Binay, Roxas has not made an announcement about the 2016 polls.
Pimentel said Duterte should rather stay as mayor of Davao than run for vice president.
“That is also the excitement of the PDP-Laban party mates, that we have a party mate who can be president of the Republic of the Philippines,” he said.
Pimentel said PDP-Laban will use a system similar to US primaries in selecting its 2016 candidates.
