After almost 40 years, I visited on Tuesday, Sept. 17, the town of Datu Piang, an old settlement upstream of Rio Grande de Mindanao.
Known before as Dulawan, I first visited the town as a young journalist along with Cotabato newsmen Charlie Señase, Ali Macabalang and Blah Bagundang.
We were in pursuit of leads to get more information about a notorious kidnapper Kumander Mubarak.
It was during those visits to then Mayor Tung Uy Tina when I first saw the 200-year-old Spanish cannons.
The oldest of the two brass cannons was made in Sevilla, Spain in 1792 while the second was in 1862.
On Tuesday, back in Datu Piang after almost four decades, I saw the cannons again.
This time I am pursuing a different lead – how to turn this old town into a major production area for the Freshwater Lobster locally called “Udang.”
