The dreaded African Swine Fever continued its devastation of Cotabato’s Hog Industry hitting the biggest hog farm in the province, Mamitas Farm in Makilala town with a hog population of over 2,000 heads.
Last night, my friend Marlon Aranas, whose family owns the Mamitas Farm informed me that their hog farm lost over 2,000 heads because of ASF.
This is the biggest number of hogs infected by ASF in one farm which could seriously affect the supply of meat in the province, especially with the coming holidays.
Makilala is one of the areas in Cotabato Province which was affected by the ASF, including Kidapawan City, Mlang, Pres. Roxas and Antipas.
Hardest hit were the Backyard Hog Raisers who do not have sufficient bio-security facilities to protect their farms from the spread of ASF.
Local Government Units had extended assistance to the farmers initially but the sheer number of farmers affected has overwhelmed the LGUs’ capacity to assist.
Local Chief Executives like Kidapawan City Mayor Paolo Evangelista have started to look at options to ensure sufficient meat supply for their constituents during the holidays.
The options include Cattle Fattening and importation of live Sheep from nearby Australia.
