Revise, Amend RTL! PH No. 1 Rice Importer; Prices Soar To P60/Kg.

Six years after the Economic Team of the previous administration pushed for the liberalization of the Rice Industry with the passage of the Rice Tariffication Law, the price of rice in the market soared from P38 in 2018 to P60 today.
Filipino Rice Consumers, including poor families, paid an additional P70-B last year because of the staggering increase in the price of rice and unless this flawed law is amended, the consumers will continue to suffer from this injustice.
Worse, the Rice Self-Sufficiency level of the country which was placed at 95.3% in 2017 had plummeted to 77% today making our country the No. 1 Rice Importer in the World.
With government emasculating the National Food Authority (NFA), the Rice Industry is now virtually controlled by an informal group of traders and importers called the Rice Cartel who control supply and prices in the market.
Clearly, the Filipino rice consumers and farmers did not benefit from the RTL and when a legislation results in disservice and injustice to the people, it must be reviewed, corrected and amended.
