Yes, We Can Raise Cattle In Small Confined Feedlots

Skeptics and naysayers who debunk the idea that Mindanao and the other agricultural provinces of the Philippines could be major producers of Livestock, especially Cattle, Goats and Sheep because there is not enough area, should understand that modern Livestock Farming only needs a few hectares to breed and raise thousands of animals.
The system had long been adopted by Cattle farmers in the more advanced agricultural countries like the U.S., Australia and even Europe.
Many of our cattle raisers in the Philippines are already doing this with great success.
The facilities are called Cattle Feedlots where with just a few hectares, hundreds and even thousands of animals could be raised and fattened.
What is critical in the operation of these facilities is the availability of feed materials which is why I am pushing for the promotion of Sorghum and Soybeans farming.
Along with Corn, Copra Meal and Oil Palm Kernel Cake, Sorghum and Soybeans produced in huge volumes would be all that we need to adopt this new Livestock Farming Technology.
Cattle, Goats and Sheep farming is our best option to address the meat shortfall in the country because of the devastation of the backyard hog industry by the African Swine Fever.
Aside from supplying the local requirements, we should be inspired by the fact that if we produce Halal Beef, Chevon and Lamb, we could actually target the huge Halal Meat Market in the world.
“The global halal meat market size was valued at USD 870.4 billion in 2023. It is estimated to reach a predicted value of USD 1,654.8 billion by 2032 at a CAGR of 7.4% during the forecast period,” according to the Straits Research website.
This is doable and what we only need is to establish a sustainable supply of feeds and silage which is why I am persistently promoting the planting of Sorghum and Soybeans and other grains crops.
