The towns and cities of the six provinces of Western Visayas namely Negros Occidental, Iloilo, Antique, Capiz, Aklan and Guimaras will be the first recipients of the Giant Bamboo propagules and Abuyog Sweet Jackfruit this week which I am giving out for free.
The program will be launched in Negros Occidental on Wednesday with Gov. Bong Lacson receiving 400 Giant Bamboo planting materials and 80 Abuyog Sweet Jackfruit seedlings.
Each town and city will receive 10 Giant Bamboo large planting materials and 2 Jackfruit seedlings which would later serve as the “Mother Trees” or the sources of planting materials for expansion.
Yesterday, a 10-wheel.Wing Van owned by a friend and townmate, Roberto Alba, Jr., left my farm nursery in Kidapawan City loaded with over 5,000 seedlings.
From Western Visayas, the “Binhi” caravan will proceed to Mindoro Island, then Luzon.
The distribution of the planting materials in all towns and cities all over the country marks the start of my personal.advocacy to contribute to the Re-Greening of the Philippines which had lost 90% of its forest cover in the last 120 years.
The program is now personally supported by Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu who has instructed his regional offices to supervise the planting by the LGUs.
I have asked Sec. Cimatu to provide the LGUs additional planting materials and prepare this early the blueprint for the establishment of Bamboo processing facilities in identified cluster areas.
Since Bamboo is a long gestating crop, I don’t expect to stay long enough in this world to witness the success of the program.
This early though, I am already filled with joy seeing how the LGU executives eagerly await their share of the seedlings.
