Last week, as I discussed with friends the resumption our breeding program to produce the “Manok Pinoy” strain, I was asked what is the best genetic combination to produce a sturdy and prolific egg-laying free range chicken.
In my experience as a Free-Range Chicken Breeder, the best genetic combination is Oriental male, which in my breeding formula is Parawakan or the local Asil, over female Heritage breeds.
Not all heritage breeds, however, could be good partners to our Parawakan because other heritage breeds have clumpy and coarse meat.
In my long years of experience in breeding free-range chicken, I found the Plymouth Barred Rock and the Black Australian Orpington as the most ideal partners of our Parawakan.
The PBR and Black Australorp are not only prolific egg layers but also possess a meat texture which is highly similar to our local chicken with firm and long muscle strands.
This month, with the help of an old friend who had kept the PBR and Black Australorp lines, Toto Albano, I will have at least 1,000 females of both lines which would be bred with my Asils in the farm.
This is the genetic formula which produces the Manok Pinoy which now has become a byword among free-range chicken breeders.
