Some 300 families of Philippine Marines based in Buldon, Maguindanao will receive breeding materials of Manok Pinoy and planting materials of Abuyog Sweet Jackfruit and Giant Bamboo in ceremonies scheduled Nov. 17.
The program to encourage soldiers to get involved in food production is sponsored by the Support Our Troops Philippines, Inc.
SOTPh is headed by Anna Parreño, wife of former Marines Commandant Major General Alvin Parreño.
Anna and SOTPh visited me in my farm in Kidapawan City earlier this year and sought my help in their programs for Filipino soldiers.
The first recipients are members of the 1st Marine Brigade based in Buldon under Brig. Gen. Jonas Lumawag.
In the Nov. 17 activity, I have requested several vegetable seed companies to participate by holding a Vegetable Derby similar to what was done in Bukidnon and Pagalungan, Maguindanao.
Through this program, soldiers, in time of peace, could also be farmers.
