North Cotabato could soon become a major producer of free-range chicken, Manok Pinoy, which I personally developed in 2010 as part of our shift to Corporate Governance where the provincial government provides production support, processing facilities and a ready market.
This will be a mass-based program where farming families in the remote areas of the province will raise Manok Pinoy free-range chicken supervised by government veterinarians and animal health experts.
All the elements needed in ensuring the success of the program are already present.
1. We already have the breed of chicken, Manok Pinoy, which I bred in 2010 and all that is needed is to mass produce them using modern technology;
2. We have already started producing critical components in Feeds Production like Soybeans and Sorghum while farmers could supply Corn, Copra Meal and other raw materials;
Under the Free-Range Manok Pinoy Production Program, farming families will be provided with at least 200 fully-immunized chicks, feeds and biologics which they will raise in their backyard for three months under the supervision of provincial veterinarians and barefoot poultry and livestock technicians.
They will also be provided with financial support in establishing their ranging area, from fishing nets to protect the chicks from predators to sheds where they will be kept at night.
Upon reaching a slaughter weight of at least 1 kilo, the Manok Pinoy Production Program buys back and picks up the free-range chicken from the farm, deducts the cost of feeds and biologics and gives the farmer another set of chicks for another production cycle.
With four batches of 5,000 farming families raising free-range Manok Pinoy, or 20,000 families, the Manok Pinoy Production Program could supply the market with at least 800,000 dressed free-range chicken (at 80% survival) every month.
That will have an earning value of about P200-M for the program every month which will go to the farming families providing them with sustainalble sources of income.
More than that, with the establishment of the Provincial Feed Mill to provide Manok Pinoy growers uniform nutritional inputs for their chicken while Corn, Sorghum and Soybeans farmers will have a ready market for their produce.
The perennial problem faced by Corn farmers every harvest season of manipulated prices will be addressed by this program because they could deliver their produce straight to the provincial Corn Grains Silo System for use by the provincial feed mill.
North Cotabato will thus become the Free-Range Chicken Production Capital of the Philippines through the implementation of the Corporate Governance Innovation.
But we have to win the 2025 elections to realize this.
