I have always believed that the farm is the best classroom.
This was proven once again on Tuesday in Naawan, Misamis Oriental in the harvest of the Sorghum Demo Farm.
One of the challenges in the farming of Sorghum, an African grass which produces grains rich in protein, is the harvesting.
Harvesters complain that they suffer from itch because the hairy stalks of Sorghum.
Since Sorghum farming is a new agricultural activity being pushed by the Mindanao Development Authority to boost the region’s livestock and poultry industry, finding the appropriate equipment for the harvesting of the crop has been an issue.
On Tuesday, on the recommendation of the owner of Naawan, Misamis Oriental Mayor Dennis Roa, we decided to try using the mechanized Rice Harvester to harvest the Sorghum.
The harvester awarded by the Department of Agriculture to the Municipality of Naawan is specifically designed for rice harvesting but since Sorghum has grains like rice, we decided to give it a try.
The result was very successful.
The Rice Harvester was not only able to harvest the grains. It also churned out the leaves and stalks ideal for silage.
More than that, the experiment reduced the labor involved in the harvesting and the workers will no longer complain of itch when they harvest Sorghum.
This all happened simply because an actual farm experiment was conducted.
