Growing up in the farm with grandparents who were both farmers, Jose Cordero Piñol and Azucena Magbanua, I and my brothers learned simple and practical farming.
To deworm his Carabaos, Lolo Jose simply pounded tobacco leaves, soaked these in water and, using a water gun made out of bamboo, pumped the concoction into the beasts through the anus.
After a few minutes, the Carabaos would excrete everything from its digestive system, including all parasites.
To ensure that his Carabaos would have regular access to salt, he sawed off one nod-length of a bamboo pole, made perforations at the bottom end and placed a handful of salt.
He added some water to make the salt drip and then hung the bamboo tube within licking reach of his Carabaos.
I copied that technique for my goats.
So, instead of buying the imported and expensive salt block, all that I need is a bamboo tube and a few kilos of salt.
Looking back, I cannot help but admire the practical wisdom of old farmers.
