Breeding plants and animals to come up.with a desired appearance or performance is not just the Science of Genetics.
In actuality, breeding is a work of art.
Just like a painter who combines hues and colors to create a masterpiece, the breeder also conjures what would come out of his genetic mix.
The flower breeder achieves it when the petals have the color he likes while the dairy goat breeder accomplishes it when the does yield more milk with a longer holding period.
This is what I feel when I breed my chicken and goats to achieve the results I desire.
The Manok Pinoy breed which I developed 11 years ago comes in two main colors – Black and Red.
I breed Red to Red and Black to Black to set two different families which I could later crossbreed to achieve the hybrid vigor.
Now, I am developing a new family of light grey fowls after the color popped out from the breeding yards.
I decided to set them as a distinct breed after I found that the pullets layed eggs earlier than the Black and Red Manok Pinoy.
I am not sure where the color came from but I remember that an old chicken farmer in Oregon sent me some hens of the same color many years ago.
My friend in the US, April Howington said the color is almost the same as the Sussex, an Old English breed.
Since this new strain which I now call “Kanawayon” lacks the muscle mass, I will infuse a genetic line to improve it.
That is going to be another genetic art masterpiece in the making.
